A New Harbor Weather Station for Peace River
Punta Gorda Boaters Alliance has been working to purchase and install a weather station on Marker 4 in the Peace River (near the Fishermen’s Village entrance). Thanks to many sources, especially work done by Ron Jones of the Peace River Sail and Power Squadron, the late PGBA president Jay Buckley, the local USCG Auxiliary and Learn 2 Sail, this project is now coming to fruition! Grant funding will be provided by Charlotte County Marine Advisory Committee (MAC), with a bridge loan from the Punta Gorda Sailing Club.
The purchase of the station was made in January, 2017 and will be installed soon. The Weather Station will provide real-time wind, rain, temperature and barometer information via a web display, and will be available on the Boaters Alliance website. Weather data will also be shared with NOAA in near real-time to assist in weather forecasts and warnings for the Charlotte Harbor area. Installation help will be provided by the Punta Gorda Canal Maintenance Department.
PGBA will be investigating ways to expand the weather network into Charlotte Harbor. Watch for the station on the Punta Gorda Boaters Alliance website in 2017.
